What is Neurological physiotherapy?
The brain and nervous system
Our bodies are incredible! Our brain is the centre of our living experience and the mega computer which helps our entire body function. From the brain come our nerves, which sends signals to the rest of the body. When there is damage to these body parts, either directly or indirectly, they can have profound impacts on our ability to walk, talk and eat- plus so much more!
Neurological Physiotherapy is a targeted type of physiotherapy which aims at improving the function of the brain and nervous system when damage is caused by disease or trauma. All Physiotherapists have general training in treating neurological conditions, however given the complexities and nature of the nervous system and the impact it has on the body, it is highly advised that your treating Physiotherapist has additional experience and knowledge when it comes to assessing and treating these types of conditions.

Common neurological conditions we treat at intergen health
Strokes
A stroke, or Cerebrovascular Accident, is a condition in which the blood supply to your brain is interrupted. This is caused by either an artery becoming blocked (ischemic) or a bleed on the brain (hemorrhagic). Both of these cause a disruption to the blood supply which in turns causes cell death in the brain. The amount of cells and the function of those cells which are impacted will depend on the type of stroke and the location of the stroke. This will cause different symptoms.
PArkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a type of movement disorder which impacts how the body moves. It is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. This can have a profound impact on many different functions of the body including unwanted movements (tremors), stiff body parts, slow and small movements, reduced ability to walk, reduced cognitive function, bodily changes to blood pressure and more.
multiple sclerosis (ms)
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a type of auto-immune disorder which results in the body attacking and breaking down the protective sheath that surrounds the nerves within the brain and spinal cord. When this sheath break downs, signal are slowed down and messages being sent and received are impacted. This causes lots of different changes in the body including movement issues, reduced bladder/bowel control, reduced sensation, tingling, numbness and more.
Traumatic brain injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury which is caused by external direct contact to the skull which causes brain injury. The injury can impact one part of the body and be mild in nature to a profound injury impacting different parts of the brain with severe impacts on the body. Common causes of TBI include vehicle related accidents, violence and assault.
